With 1 Easy Step, 87-YO Has Saved 20 Mn Litres of Water


A newspaper report in 2007 shook Aabid Surti to take motion. The report acknowledged that for each drop of water that fell per second from a leaking faucet, 1000 litres went down the drain monthly.

That’s when the 87-year-old shaped Drop Lifeless Basis, an NGO, with the tagline — ‘Save each drop, or drop useless’.

This one-man military goes round with a plumber and volunteer, fixing leaking taps throughout Mumbai at no cost.

Rising up in Mumbai, Surti noticed his mom queuing up for water at 4 AM each day. He remembers watching folks combat for water whereas standing in that queue.

These experiences are the explanation why the necessity to save each drop comes inherently to him.

“I consider in saving each drop of water as a result of I do know its worth. I’ve been introduced up on the pavement, and there I’ve seen folks combating for each bucket of water. My childhood is behind me, however the combat for water has remained with me to this present day. So, each drop and each leakage haunts me,” says Surti to NDTV.

Each Sunday he visits a constructing on Mira Street, Mumbai, to restore leaking taps.

To facilitate these Sunday visits, Surti visits the constructing on the prior Monday to take the mandatory permission from the secretary and places up posters. Then, the next Sunday morning, they begin knocking on each door of that constructing, asking folks if their taps want fixing.

This fashion, he has managed to avoid wasting over 20 million litres of water thus far.
