I’ve all the time loved Lynda La Plante’s work on TV. I’m much more impressed now that I realise that she has “realized Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene by coronary heart” (The books of my life, 1 September). I’ve been engaged on that poem for nearly 40 years and have by no means met anybody who has managed that.

• Rejoining the EU’s Horizon science analysis programme shall be a lift for the nation, the federal government tells us, because the UK will develop into a part of a multinational enterprise with international attain (Report, 7 September). The irony of this, and the utter stupidity that has led us right here, shall be misplaced on nobody.
